Read the Sept. 8, 2013 story about Campbell Barracks in Heidelberg closing and thought I'd check on Taukkunen Barracks in Worms. This was my first active duty posting as an Infantry Officer with the 1/39 Infantry Regiment. This was a mechanized infantry battalion that was part of the Eighth Infantry Division (Mech.) I was stationed here from late 1964 to mid-1966. Worms was a great duty station. The surrounding area was great for day visits on weekends. Who knows, I might even get back to Worms one of these years.

Worms was my first assignment in the Army and I loved it. I worked with DCSPER office from April 1980 to Feb 1984- Human Affairs Office. Loved the city, met some wonderful friends both German and American. Loved the park across the street, Martin Luther Plaza, ice cream store, great wine, wonderful stizchel, fries really loved the German foods, and the train was right there to go exploring. It is sad to see all our military installations go by the way side. Loved all my time in Germany and going back for the first time this October 2013. Looking forward to visiting the places I fondly remember

I was stationed at Worms, Germany from 1960 - 1963, 1st ARB, 48th Infantry, enjoyed Germany and most of the civilian people I came in contact with, a lot of memories from those days and times that I still think about today, hard to believe it has since been turned into a hotel, nothing remains the same forever.

I lived there for sixth (1968) and seventh (MAHS 1969) grades and it is one of my fondest military dependent memories. I revisited in the mid 70's and most recently in 2006. In my last visit I was able to see the private redevelopment first hand. It happens that the developer works out of my former address 10 Kantstrasse. He was so gracious in inviting me inside to see how the old residences now look. The visit invoked a variety of emotions as I saw the school, teen club, the sledding hill, the big trees once climbed - big branches even named, etc. I just wished that I had spent more time exploring outside of the American community. I was shocked to realize how close it was to the bahnhof (hugh train fan). I was clueless about the location as I immediately sought a taxi after departing the train.

I was in Worms from Jan 68 through Mar 69 with STRATCOM-EUR working in the com center. Our barricks was the newer building just to the right of the main gate. Loved the city, walked it when I could but never in uniform. The ice cream store was a favorate. The com center was a 24/7 operation and we were on 12 hr shifts.

I was born in Worms and am still living there. Had some great fun playing on the playgrounds in there. Back before 9/11 nobody really cared if you came into the American villages and though Thomas Jefferson Village was closed in 1999 we still have some American villages around, but they have been closed for everybody but soldiers and their families after the attacks. Concerning your question about what happened to the apartments, they are in fact renovating some of the buildings since the early 2000s. For instance, an elementary school moved in in 2001 . The best for you would be to check out liebenauer-feld.de for some plans and photos of the renovated houses and westend-gs.de if you are interested how they made up the school. However, there is still plenty of free space as many buildings (especially in the village's northern parts) have been pulled down. Hope these information will help you. Cheers!

Our missile Bn arrived in Germany from Ft. Bliss in Dec i957. We moved into the third floor of bldg 5801 which is apparently the Parkhotel now. Our missile assembly unit was part of the 67th Missile Bn. A Battery. I went home in January 1959. I had many friends and often wonder if any are still out there after 50+ years.
